Things to look out for when tiling in extreme weather conditions

As we all know, Australia can give us some extreme weather. Heat, wind dust, super absorbent surfaces and even a combination of the four. We still want work to progress on these days so there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure your tiling job doesn't fail at the end of the day.

Dusty Tiles

When the backs of tiles are dusty it is recommended to dip the tiles in clean water to remove the dust particles. If the dust is left on the tile, the adhesive will stick to the dust, not the tile.

This means that the amount of adhesive actually contacting the tile is greatly reduced. After some time, the tile will become loose because the adhesive will have been blocked from attaching to the tile itself.

Strong Sun - Drying Wind - High Temperatures - Highly Absorbent Substrates.

All the above are extreme conditions that can cause problems with the performance of adhesives if you don't know the risks. The open time of the adhesive can reduce from 30 minutes to just a few minutes.

REDUCED OPEN TIME

The open time is reduced, where the adhesive you have troweled on the substrate's surface dries before you get the chance to get the tile laid on it. You need to carefully check that a skin hasn't formed on the surface of the adhesive.

This skin will stop the adhesive forming the proper strong bond with the tile and again, the tile will come loose over time.

To fix this problem, break the skin and re-freshen the adhesive by re-spreading the adhesive with a notched trowel. Don't wet the adhesive with water once the skin has formed. This will only add to the problem by forming an anti- adhesive film.

Poor care immediately after tiling.

While the adhesive is setting to give you the optimum performance, you need to protect the newly tiled area from exposure to conditions that can harm the adhesive. To give the adhesive the best conditions to do its job make sure of the following:

Don't wash or expose to rain for at least 24 Hours.
Protect the tiling from frost and strong sun for at least 5 to 7 days.
