Australian internships from Devex Systems

In an effort to give back to our industry, Devex Systems hosts interested engineering interns through Australian Internships. Each year, we host 2-3 enthusiastic engineers to complete a 12 to 26-week internship. During each intern's time at Devex, they work on a project depending on their skills, interests and knowledge. Interns are encouraged to design their project, project timeline and take ownership of the outcome.

When placing an intern, there are discussions about available projects that they could complete. This helps applicants decide if Devex Systems is the right place for them. They are then guided along the project journey by the Devex Technical Team. Whilst working on their project, they build positive working relationships with staff, attend staff meetings, and are included as a regular staff member. This provides each intern with valuable experience and helps prepare them for when they finish their studies.

Here a few words from some of our interns. They provide an interesting insight into life at Devex!

"I had an amazing internship experience at Devex Systems. During the internship I worked on a challenging project. In the beginning, it was hard because it was a challenging project to start and English isn't my first language but my co-workers were really helpful and understanding. During the project, we have many ideas how it would look like when complete. We had some meetings where we discussed engineering problems and I learned so much. In the process, I had the opportunity to see that things sometimes will not work like we planned. However, we worked together any problems that appeared during this time," Debora, Brazil.

"I did a five-month internship at DEVEX Systems in 2014. If I go back in time, it is a little bit scaring to think that my first job interview and my first working experience happened in a place very far from my home country, with different cultures and people only speaking in English. When I started working, I got surprised because the company exceeded my expectations. My boss and my co-workers really made me feel part of the team. I was given important projects and tasks to accomplish which contributed to the business and I also felt very comfortable and happy in the working environment. My main activities were to review the company's inventory system in order to minimise the stock levels of key product lines as well as help with the documentation of a new product developed by the company involving technical drawings on AutoCAD. I feel very lucky to have the chance to have lived such a great experience and I miss all of you guys. Hugs from Brazil," Pedro, Brazil.

"I interned at Devex Systems June-September of 2016; Australia is a great place to visit, even during winter! For the majority of my time as an intern, I worked on Devex Systems' Solamander system. This was a neat project for an entry-level engineer because it incorporated many of the subjects I learned as an undergraduate student. The focus of my project was to add a new function to the PLC (programmable logic controller) that would flip on the heat pump when the gas-boiler was being overworked, running at full-bore. I had no experience with PLC's, but Stephen and John were a great help, taking the time to explain what they had in place and how to tweak features to get things running. My final design used the water's temperature difference across the gas boiler as a trigger, if it was beginning to stagnate the PLC would flip the actuator and start sucking hot water from the heat pump. That explanation makes it sound really simple, I can attest, it wasn't! There were a lot of other factors that came into play, optimising timeouts, checking to make sure the water in the gas boiler was hotter than the loop temperature, adding physical sensors where needed, and much more! Interning at Devex Systems was a challenge, the internship itself is self-constructed (I spent the first two weeks designing the project that I would be doing while I was there) and the work itself can be complex.
