Passive Smoke Ventilation Systems from Unique Window Services

house fire

Every year fire affects thousands of households subjecting them to deadly smoke and gas. Australian Bureau of Statistics states that from October 2006 - 2007 34,900 Queensland and 41,200 Victorian households declared house fires (Australian Bureau of Statistics, State and Regional Indicators, Victoria, Sep 2008). From these reported households only half implemented systems to better prepare themselves in the event of a fire. The most life threatening aspect of a fire is inhalation of the smoke. Carbon monoxide is a highly toxic gas which when drawn in can suffocate, choke, and chemically burn the windpipe of the victim.

When an internal fire ignites and is unable to be controlled smoke will fill the effected room then spill into other parts of the house. In moments a small kitchen fire can spread through the entire house, making it nearly impossible for the occupants to escape. As hot air rises so does the smoke which has no escape route therefore filling a room with its fatal toxins. Whilst smoke alarms will notify you when the smoke is detected a more preventative measure should take place to ensure the safety of the occupants and potentially protect your valuable assets.

There are several preventive measures that can be incorporated which are being installed and integrated into new residential and commercial developments across Australia. Smoke ventilation Systems will help to draw out the harmful smoke and built up gas through your buildings high level operable windows. Within seconds of smoke detection, low voltage actuators with fail-safe battery backup systems receive a signal from the smoke alarm, driving the windows open allowing smoke to escape and more time for evacuation.

In the early design stages high level operable windows can be strategically placed in a building which will not compromise the ambiance or overall appearance. For existing properties with high level windows, actuators can be easily mounted by professional window automation installers. When renovating or re-roofing a building new high level windows should be incorporated to relieve occupants of suffocation in the event of a fire.

On a commercial scale, one of Queensland's most recent projects was Brisbane Central located on Queen Street Mall. Consisted of two conjoining stages; the first refurbishing the old T&G Building; the second was a completely new building on Albert Street. Smoke dispersal systems were installed into each building, each sash had 2 x 800mm stroke UCS supermaster chain winders in conjunction with the fail safe battery back-up systems. Connected to the fire alarms the windows will open in the event of smoke detection.
