Royal treatment for Australian Window Association Design Award winners

Proud winners of the 2007 AWA Design Awards took to the stage
to accept their trophies on Saturday, 29 September at the AWA Annual Dinner,
the highly-anticipated culminating event in the AWA National Conference &
Exhibition schedule.
The AWA Design Awards are the only awards of their kind in Australia, recognising
the efforts of manufacturers and suppliers to the fenestration industry that excel
in the production and promotion of windows and doors through exciting innovation.
Held at the Royal Pines Resort, Queensland, the AWA National Conference & Exhibition
ran from 27 - 29 September, hosting over 300 fenestration delegates from around the
country. Key representatives from trade groups and associations sampled the exhibition
for the first time ever on Trade Day, Thursday, 27 September.
Over 40 detailed Award entries were received, with three new categories introduced this
year thanks to the popularity of the Awards in 2006 and in response to suggestions from
members. AWA Design Award categories reflect the different sizes of AWA member companies
and the various areas of business they operate in.
The AWA remained completely separate from the judging process at all times, in the
interest of impartiality and fairness. External industry stakeholders from different
corners of the building game comprised the judging panel.
Judges were Clive Solari, Design Institute of Australia; Tony McDonald, Building Products
Innovation Council; Garry Kwok, HIA; Geoff Roberts, Roberts & Associates; and AWA life
members Roland and Stephanie Clark and John Mannile.
Clive Solari, NSW President of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and Director of
D3 Design, commented, "This is the second year I've been privileged to sit on the judging
panel of the AWA Design Awards, and the standard of entries and ingenuity of ideas
continues to impress. The Awards are an effective medium for promoting design innovation
in the industry and as such will continue to be supported by the DIA."
"My favourite entry this year was the electronic louvre system, a very clever and clean
looking concept", Clive added, "Clever thinking is what I look for in my work all the
time, so it stood-out in my eyes," referring to the winner of the Most Innovative Window
System award, the Altair Powerlouvre Window System.
Ian Frame, Executive Director of the AWA comments, "The increased popularity of this
year's Awards is indicative of the exciting growth of new product designs. Australian
window manufacturers have responded cleverly to current consumer demand for energy
efficiency, sound reduction and improved security."
"The AWA congratulates all the winners of this year's Awards, and invites all members
to start considering their entries for 2008," Ian said.
