Now in its fourth year, the International Festival of Landscape Architecture is designed to position landscape architecture as a leading profession in shaping a better future. The program of the 2017 Festival, which took place in Sydney during the 12-15 October 2017, ranged from the International Landscape Architecture Conference to the Future Street Project. WE-EF, Principal Corporate Partner of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), looks back at the key Festival events.
2017 International Landscape Architecture Conference, 13 - 14th October
The focus of the 2017 The 3rd City AILA Conference was on the environmental issues, on how future cities will be able to meet challenges of changing ecological and climate conditions facing the need to grow and expand and, at the same time, trying to preserve as much natural environment and wildlife as possible.
The 3rd City is the future city, a speculation, an idea to be postulated and explored.

WE-EF asked Julie Lee, Director Landscape Architect from Tract Consultants, on her impressions from the Festival
Q. What was the biggest emotion you felt during the Festival and the Conference?
Inspiration. The festival brought together a broad spectrum of speakers and topics from the theoretical to the real that reinforced the expansive range of our collective interest.
The inspiration has led to post Festival reflection which is an important benefit of attending.
Q. What was your personal highlight from the Festival?
The Festival demonstrated the maturity of our profession in curating a highly successful event through the dedication of members and our national AILA team.
Have to also mention Jan van der Grift for his whimsical presentation, won't forget him or the Dutch Rivers for a while!
Q. What are you looking forward to at the next year's Festival?
The opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues from across Australia in conjunction with a visit to the rapidly developing Gold Coast region.

The Future Street Project took over the Alfred Street, Sydney 12-15th October as part of the AILA 2017 Festival.
The Future Street Project, 12 - 15th October 2017
The Future Street Project took over the Alfred Street, Sydney 12-15th October as part of the AILA 2017 Festival.
Set up as a conceptual visualisation of how our streets of the future may look, the Future Street installation included Complete Street, Green Street and Today Street showing the difference in balance whether it is being shifted towards people, cycling and public transport or towards cars. The Smart Street with the Internet of Things (IoT) Lounge was the nerve centre and data hub of the Future Street Project.
During the Future Street WE-EF interviewed visitors on their opinions and feedback - the results will be presented in a video report early next year.

The competition entries will be opened February to June 2018, with the winners to be announced at the 2018 AILA Festival.

North to Sydney City Industry Tour took 30 landscape architecture professionals to visit the recently completed projects.
North to Sydney City Industry Tour, 12th October
North to Sydney City Industry Tour took 30 landscape architecture professionals to have a look at the recently completed projects, which included Coal Loader Waverton (North Sydney Council), Barangaroo Headlands (PWP and JPW), Darling Harbour Live (Hassell) and Goods Line (ASPECT Studios).
The tour ended at the Goods Line - the project featuring WE-EF exterior luminaires - which is an elevated park that forms a strategic link from Central Station to Chinatown and Darling Harbour and is a disused rail corridor reimagined as a leafy, energized civic spine in Sydney's most densely populated area.
