R+T Australia exhibition will highlight solutions
to building energy efficiency challenges

As Australia swelters through record heatwaves during the summer of 2013-14, with more predicted in coming decades, energy efficiency is now a key driver in building design - and a specialist building exhibition to be held in Melbourne this coming August will highlight some innovative solutions.

R+T Australia 2014, to be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from August 21-23, will be the country's first-ever exhibition specialising in external building systems, such as roller shutters, doors/gates, windows, and sun protection systems.

"Rising global temperatures - which we are already seeing in Australia every summer - coupled with increasing energy prices, and potential shortages of gas and electricity supplies, mean that energy efficient building solutions are critically important for building owners, designers, specifiers and builders," said Thurain Aye, exhibition manager for R+T Australia 2014.

"All the product sectors covered by R+T Australia 2014 have a key role to play in increasing the energy efficiency of Australia's buildings - not just for new buildings, but also for existing ones where owners and occupiers are looking to reduce their energy costs and carbon footprints.

"In particular, innovations in roller shutters, sun protection systems and doors/gates offer considerable potential for energy efficiency through the application of the latest systems and techniques," Aye said.

"For example, applying the latest technology in dynamic roller shutters and sun protection systems can save up to 44% in energy use, while, doors and gates - as significant elements of building structures - will become ever more important in energy efficiency."

Aye said the development of "intelligent" door and gate control systems had the potential to reduce energy consumption considerably, through faster opening/closing cycles, and the ability to offer defined opening heights depending on the size of entering/exiting vehicles.

"For this reason, R+T Australia 2014 will have a strong focus on energy efficiency, sustainability, design and functionality among exhibitors.

"An important part of the exhibition will be an educational element designed to increase professional expertise and knowledge of the latest developments in energy-efficient intelligent building design," said Aye.

R+T Australia 2014 is a "spin-off" event of R+T in Stuttgart, Germany, regarded as the world's leading trade fair for roller shutters, doors, gates, and sun protection systems across industrial, commercial and residential applications.

R+T Stuttgart will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2015.

There have also been highly successful spin-off events in Shanghai, and Istanbul - and now the R+T exhibition concept is coming to Australia.

"The inaugural edition of R+T Australia will be the only exhibition platform in this country specifically aimed at the market for roller shutters, doors, gates, windows, glass and sun protection systems," said Aye.

Since announcing R+T Australia, there had been strong interest from Australian and international suppliers, with the show now 50% booked and a total of 35 exhibitors - both from Australia and overseas, he said.

"Our current contracted exhibitors include an excellent cross-section of garage doors, awnings, screens and blinds, as well as various ancillary products," Aye said.

"We are delighted with the progress to date, and are now on track for a total of at least 65-70 exhibitors for this inaugural show. We will be publishing a full exhibitor list and floorplan on the R+T Australia website during February."
