Rose Hill Packet Replica at Parramatta Square by Di EmmeDid you know that in 1789, it took a week to travel up and down the Parramatta River in the Rose Hill Packet? Today, it takes only two hours by ferry to navigate roundtrip from Circular Quay to Parramatta.
To commemorate the first European boat built in Australia, Di Emme was commissioned by artist Chris Kenyon, representative of Walker Corporation, to build and install a replica of the Rose Hill Packet at the lobby of 6 Parramatta Square. For this project, Chris Kenyon designed a three-quarter stylised replica of the Rose Hill Packet and worked with Di Emme to bring it to life.
Di Emme worked together with artisan carpenters, a structural engineer, and a veteran sailmaker who's familiar with old shipbuilding techniques to reproduce an accurate 3-tonne replica that could also be hung safely in the lobby.
Taking around a year to complete, Di Emme used 3D fabrication technology, as well as hand tools for the rough-hewn finish and tea staining for the rigging and sails for a more authentic look.
