Mckinnon College Stay Cool Experiment from Cocoon Coatings

mckinnon secondary college

"Many Victorian schools have portable buildings. In recent times, the Victorian Department of Education and Early Child Development (DEECD) have decided that all new portables will use reverse cycle air conditioning for heating and cooling.

We have three 'new' portables. Two of them are side by side and are virtually identical. This provided an excellent opportunity to perform a controlled experiment. One portable roof was painted with 'Stay Cool' and the other was left with the original galvanised finish.

On the 1st November, 2007 I installed two electricity meters - one in each room. At the time of writing the two electricity meters are reading - 'Stay cool' 2479 kilowatt hours, the non-treated control portable 5935 kilowatt hours. The energy saving is 48%.

Let me emphasise again that the environmental situation for these portables is virtually identical. The teaching load is identical. The meters are measuring lighting and other power (mostly computer and audio visual) but these base load requirements should be similar. Considering this the saving on heating and cooling is even more remarkable.

I am very pleased with the result of my little experiment."
