Smoke Ventilation System Windows from Unique Window Services

smoke ventilation window

As part of a fire detection and smoke ventilation system window controls play an integral role in allowing the safe evacuation of occupants.

In the early stages of a fire, when smoke is first detected, the Building Management System will send a signal to the high level operable windows to open. Often closing mid level windows and opening low level windows to draw in fresh air.

This will allow the rising smoke and other dangerous gases a means of escape, along a designated route. Now that there is a pathway through which the smoke escapes there is less of a build-up in the affected area and this gives the occupants more time to evacuate. With better visibility and less toxic fumes the occupants stand a better chance of escape in the event of a fire emergency, where every extra moment you have is precious.

Often in events such as this power is cut. To safeguard against the loss of power and therefore the non-operation of the windows, a battery back-up can be installed and fire safe cabling can be installed to ensure that during a loss of mains power this building safety element would still be operable.

Across Australia throughout many commercial and residential developments preventative measures are now being undertaken to incorporate this concept into building design. When considered during the concept stages this passive technique, particularly high level windows with controls, can positively affect the design's functionality without compromising on the aesthetics.
