Wavebar, making learning calmer.

In March 2020, Pyrotek were approached to look into acoustic products for 2x school projects. The roof system needed to achieve an Rw of 51 and the consultant had spec'd in 2 x 19mm plywood.

Pyrotek ran some predictions to replace the plywood with Wavebar to meet Rw51. The company listed the benefits of using the Wavebar instead of plywood:

  • It can save time on installations as the Wavebar can be cut with just a box knife or scissors.
  • There are less joints, which means less chances of noise breakthrough (gaps) because of the Wavebar roll size.
  • The space on thickness is 4mm for the Wavebar as compared to 38mm for plywood.
  • It is longer lasting, the Wavebar will not rot or degrade over time unlike wood; There will be no water damage.
  • It reduces transport costs. 1 pallet of Wavebar 8kg = 100m = 138m2 so 7 pallets (966m2) per job at 1.2 x 1.2 x 1.1m compared to plywood dual layer requiring 13 oversize/double pallets (50 sht per) at 1.2 x 2.44 x 1m.
  • It reduces yard space for storage. The Wavebar requires ΒΌ the storage space of plywood.

The architect, consultant, and builder were onboard and approved the change. A 2450m2 Wavebar was supplied for the first school and an additional 2600m2 was pending.

The layup was:

Outside of roof

  • 0.5mm steel roof (colorbond)
  • 110mm fibreglass thermal insulation
  • 8kgm2 Wavebar
  • 800mm Airgap
  • 75mm Fiberglass thermal insulation
  • 19mm Ceiling tile
