Trellis Door - Compliance with relevant Clause D2.21 of the BCA

The Australian Trellis Door Company's (ATDC) Egress Door has recently been certified to comply with Clause D2.21 of the BCA on the basis that it is fitted with hardware that is 'readily openable without a key from the side that faces a person seeking egress, by a single hand downward action or pushing action on a single device which is located between 900 mm and 1.1 m from the floor'.

ATDC offers a range of steel trellis doors as an economic solution for securing shop-fronts in shopping centres and on street-frontage.

These trellis doors are becoming increasingly popular in shopping centres as the main (only) store front door (no glass) due to their strength, through-visibility, competitive pricing point and low maintenance. These doors represent a significant cost saving for prospective tenants compared to the traditional forms of horizontal folding closures and vertical shutters. They are becoming increasingly preferred as the door of choice for closing off stores selling electronic equipment, white-goods and other high value items.

The company has recently developed a new egress-handle and protective plate solution to enable easy key-less opening and exit from the inside of the store in an emergency situation. It is this solution which has received the certification referred to in the opening paragraph of this article.

The plate is constructed from high-strength thick Lexan sheeting, which is cut, bent and slotted to enable it to slide with the concertina action of the trellis door. A layer of 3M black vinyl film is applied to the Lexan to block out external visibility of the handle position (Lockwood lock and handle) situated on the inside of the plate/door.

Someone trapped on the inside of the store need merely push down the lever handle and slide the trellis door sideways to gain egress from the store.

For entry to the store, another lock (ATDC Three-point Alumax Lock) is fitted to the centre of the door for easy key-turn access. This lock may be keyed-alike to other restrictive locking systems.

For further details of the proposed application and the certifier's assessment of the door prototype you can request a copy of their Certificate of Compliance 2011-0616-1 Trellis Door - Compliance with the relevant provisions of Part D1 & D2 of the BCA.
