Neilsen's Move to Sustainable Concrete Products

The amount of global greenhouse gas emissions produced by the production of Portland cement is alarming- 8%. To address this global issue, Nielsen's Concrete took the initiative to move to sustainable concrete products by working with the University of Southern Queensland.

Nielsen's Concrete is Southeast Queensland's largest independent supplier of quarry products and premixed concrete. This family-owned and operated company has been a manufacturer and supplier since the 70s. Today, the company is making a move to reduce CO2 emissions and make use of industrial waste, including slag and fly ash.

Geopolymer concrete boasts the same performance as that of Portland Cement- but without the huge environmental footprint. It does not rely on products like clay or limestone and the process of calcination, which is a big contributor to carbon dioxide emissions.

This product isn't new, the composition of geopolymer is similar to building materials used in Roman architecture, such as lime, volcanic ash, and fresh water. USQ Research is further investigating industry wastes that can be used for the formulation of geopolymer.
