NASH Solutions for Energy-Efficient Steel Framed ConstructionThe National Association of Steel-Framed Housing Inc. (NASH) is the industry association supporting the design, manufacture and construction of steel-framed residential, institutional and commercial buildings. NASH Standards are referenced as deemed-to-satisfy solutions in the National Construction Code. NCC 2022 includes new energy efficiency requirements for houses and apartments, including NatHERS 7-star and thermal bridging. Designers have numerous options using the Deemed-to-satisfy (DtS) Elemental pathway in the ABCB Housing Provisions Standard. NASH has prepared a Technical Note to assist designers with straightforward solutions for steel-framed construction.
NASH Technical Note NTN 006 explains the energy efficiency compliance paths and the importance of thermal breaks in specific situations. It then presents solutions tables for trussed and cathedral roofs, brick veneer and clad walls and finally enclosed and unenclosed floors. Worked examples show how the designer uses the Housing Provisions Standard to find the DtS Elemental timber framed solution and then uses NTN 006 to develop the steel framed solution quickly. A separate section lists calculated Total R-values for the most common forms of construction, together with all assumptions used in calculations.
