Electric or Hydronic Underfloor Heating?

Both electric and hydronic underfloor heating systems offer a superior comfort experience compared with traditional heating systems. Heat is gently distributed evenly over the entire rooms floor area providing warmth to suit the feet, body and head.

So why would you choose electric over hydronic underfloor heating? There are several reasons including type of building work, floor build up restrictions, efficiency, control and capital cost.

Renovations or New-builds

Electric underfloor heating is best suited for single room renovations or additions. An electric system offers a low build up height of only 2mm. The under tile system is installed on the existing floor surface (concrete or existing tiled floors) and simply embedded in-tile adhesive. There is no need for screeds or digging up existing floors to accommodate plastic pipes in a 60-70mm depth.

Also, for new builds, particularly where only select rooms such as bathrooms or bedrooms are heated through underfloor heating, an electric system is affordable to install and easily incorporated beneath most floor finishes, directly under tile or carpet, with or without a screed topping.

Through most parts of Australia, heating is not often required to be turned on permanently. This makes an electric underfloor heating system a better choice. Because the floor heating cables are installed directly beneath the floor finish, the response time is greatly reduced as compared to a hydronic underfloor heating system in a slab or screed.

Energy-saving controls

Energy-saver floor heating systems designed to be on demand heating appliances are suited for control by zoned thermostats, so that you only turn on the heat when you are using the room. For zones used at regular times of the day such as bathrooms, built in timer clocks can be programmed to automatically switch and off.
