There are five bushfire hazard levels, as outlined in the standard AS3959 for various construction practices and building materials. These are known as BALs (Bushfire Attack Levels):

  • BAL 12.5 (Low Risk). Possibility of Ember Attack
  • BAL 19 (Moderate Risk). Increased level of ember attack and burning debris, radiant heat up to 19kwm squared.
  • BAL 29 (High Risk). There's a greater risk from airborne burning debris and further risk from radiant heat exposure up to 29kwm squared
  • BAL 40 (Very High). Burning debris ignited by windborne embers and radiant heat exposure up to 40kwm squared
  • BAL FZ (Flame Zone). Direct flame contact from the fire front and radiant heat exposure greater than 40kwm squared.
