Safetyline Jalousie the perfect choice for new window safety requirements.

With one in ten children living in apartments in Sydney, and 44% of those children aged under five, it's no surprise that falls from windows are a serious concern, but also highly preventable. Following the 2009 formation of a working party at The Children's Hospital at Westmead to address the issue, this year's Building Code of Australia (BCA) will include specific requirements for windows above a certain height.

The good news is Safetyline Jalousie louvre windows are among the only windows on the market that already comply with these changes without any modification or additional hardware.

The new BCA

Effective from May 2013, the National Construction Code (NCC) requires window barriers for opening windows in early childhood centres and bedrooms in residential buildings (including houses, apartments and hotels) where the floor beneath the window is more than two metres above the surface beneath.

The changes will apply to new buildings and require the window to be fitted with a screen or device to restrict the window opening so that a 125mm sphere cannot pass through. The device or screen can have a child-proof lock to enable its removal (for example for cleaning).

The obvious choice for your home

So what are the options if your building project is affected by the changes? According to the Australian Window Association, the majority of windows currently on the market do not meet these new standards and will require some sort of modification or additional device to meet the new requirements.

For example, sliding or double hung windows will require a screen or a device that restricts how far the window can be opened. Awning windows will similarly require a device or modification to the chain winder to keep the opening within the new requirements.

However, there is an easier option. For a stylish, functional window option that also provides unparalleled safety and security, you can't go past Safetyline Jalousie louvre windows. With a louvre width of 123mm and an opening width of 106mm, Safetyline Jalousie louvre windows are already compliant with the new BCA, with no additional screens or locks required. The louvre opening width means that children cannot fall through or get stuck between them, nor can they pull them out (louvres require a 200kg pull out). An optional steel rod provides additional peace of mind and impenetrable security.

Safetyline Jalousie louvre windows can give you all the benefits of cross-ventilation and a beautiful, modern look, whilst keeping your family safe at all times. But better still, all without any modifications or add-ons to the existing design.
