Sensory Louvre Facade for Special School by Safetyline Jalousie Darling Point Special School in Manly, Queensland, provides specialist education for students with intellectual and physical disabilities. Its new learning centre - designed by Cottee Parker Architects and overlooking Moreton Bay, was conceived to maximise natural ventilation, connection to place, and occupant wellbeing. Safetyline Jalousie supplied 108 prefabricated SJ Jalousie louvre windows across teaching, support, and circulation spaces. Specified for their high free air performance, they deliver consistent cross ventilation throughout the building, reducing reliance on mechanical systems in an exposed coastal climate. What sets the project apart is what the louvres do beyond ventilation. Working with the architects, Safetyline Jalousie developed a bespoke solution using custom-coloured Vanceva laminated glass blades, graduated to reflect the sunrise over Moreton Bay. Informed by sensory learning pedagogy, the blades diffuse natural light into soft, shifting washes of colour supporting calm, engagement, and orientation for students with sensory processing differences. Frames were finished in Platinum Anodised for coastal durability, and the SJ Jalousie system holds Red List Free status on the Declare database. A facade that performs technically while contributing to the educational experience. Read the case study at safetylinejalousie.com.au.
