Noise Reduction and Aesthetics from Supawood Architectural Linings

Supawood's Supaslat Maxi achieves unexpected acoustic benefits in the refit of the Duke of Gloucester bistro in Randwick, NSW.

The Duke of Gloucester, a prominent historic landmark hotel in Randwick, recently decided to renovate their upstairs Bistro and Dinning area and discovered unexpected acoustic benefits.

The DOG proprietors wanted to retain the character of the old building. To blend with the period timber and stone theme the look of heavy timber beams was required but cost and logistics presented limitations. However, the aesthetic appeal and light weight construction of Supaslat Maxi proved the perfect choice.

A further challenge at the time was numerous unsightly services above the ceiling which needed to be concealed but also remain accessible. Steve Lundy of Lundy Building services, an approved Supawood installer, suggested using Supabab black acoustic textile as a means to black out the ceiling above the beams.

The use of Supabab also offered the additional benefit of being acoustically absorptive. There has always been considerable street noise from the traffic on the adjoining street which patrons of the DOG had come to accept as the norm but this unwanted noise was significantly dampened and the patrons' comfort has now greatly increased.

Following installation the improvement in acoustic quality was incredible and far exceeded expectations. Laboratory testing shows that the Supaslat Maxi with Supabab system once installed has a noise reduction coefficient of 0.85, one of the highest available and certainly the highest for such a good looking product.

Following this unexpectedly positive outcome the DOG decided to redo their downstairs ceilings using the same system. A happy client with happier patrons!
