Steel Lintel Durability Ratings from Treco Steel

Treco Steel Lintels and their Durability Rating

All lintels supplied by Treco Steel are hot-dip galvanized in accordance with the Australian Standard for Hot-dip Galvanized (zinc) coatings on fabricated ferrous articles. The impact resistance of the galvanized coating complies with Australian Standard for built-in components for masonry construction. The durability rating of the protective coating is R3 and all ABC Pro-Series Lintels are marked as demanded by the standard.

However, where lintels are installed in areas of severe marine environment (i.e. up to 100 mtrs from a non-surf coastline or up to 1 km from a surf coastline), a corrosion resistance rating of R4 is required. To meet the R4 Durability Classification as detailed in the Australian Standard for "Masonry Structures (AS 3700) and which is defined in the Australian Standard for "Built-in components for masonry construction" (AS/NZS 2699.3:2002), either of the following options should be taken:

1. The use of stainless steel sections of specific grades, OR
2. Apply a two pack epoxy coating to hot-dip galvanised (R3) lintels as per the protective coating system specification given in AS/NZS 2699.3:2002.

As usual, your engineer can guide you in this process.
