Aggregate Tree Surround Installation with StoneSet

tree surround with permeable aggregate

StoneSet have release new guidelines to prepare tree surrounds for StoneSet installation on the new blog.

New Tree

  • Plan to have the root ball positioned as low as possible. This will give the tree plenty of room to grow unobstructed and reduce the likelihood of the roots disturbing the StoneSet surface.

  • Install the StoneSet with a tree collar. This can be a temporary or permanent collar, which is simply used to form a tidy border around the tree trunk to allow the young tree to grow unobstructed. The area between the collar and trunk can be filled with loose stone if desired.

  • Gentle compaction of no-fines aggregate around the tree is required, so when building up the base around the trunk it is advisable to do so 50mm at a time. This will help compact the base in a way that will have minimal impact on the new tree, but reduce the chances of sinkage after the StoneSet installation. I would recommend a settling period of a couple of weeks in some cases when possible

    Established Tree

  • StoneSet can be installed up to and around tree roots on an established tree. The movement on older trees is minimal, so the StoneSet can usually flex with the movement without cracking.

  • Often the soil or gravel around an existing tree is a sufficient base to install StoneSet directly onto. If this is the case a 40mm layer is simply removed in preparation for the installation.
