Creating a safer environment in specialised vehicles

A leading international Indonesian business specialising in the manufacture of armoured vehicles sought the help of industry experts, Pyrotek Noise Control, to overcome acoustic problems within their specialised transport vehicles primarily used to transport military personnel.

The acoustic issues

The key acoustic issues for this type of vehicle are safety, fatigue and communication. Exposure to excessive noise and vibration can cause fatigue, and hearing damage can occur at levels of 85 dBA. Radio and intercommunication systems are needed to enable contact between the crew members and the outside world and the ability to exchange information clearly and effectively is a vital part of military tactics.

Noise levels before treatment measured in excess of 79 dBA. To put this into perspective, normal speech registers at approximately 65 dBA and a noise level of 85 dBA is equivalent to standing beside a diesel generator.

Developing a solution

Based on Pyrotek's experience with specialised vehicles, a range of noise control products were suggested to obtain the best acoustic results to suit the confined environment.

armoured vehicle production

The two major concerns in the personnel cabin were noise entering the area and the reflected noise energy (reverberation). The side panels of the personnel cabin were lined with Sorberbarrier V, resolving both issues with the one composite product, combining acoustic grade foam laminated to a high performance noise barrier. A grey perforated vinyl facing provided a tough yet flexible finish which enhanced and lightened the cabin space.

The vehicle was treated with Soundpaint, a damping compound to reduce noise generated by vibration in metal panels. Soundmat noise barrier was used on the vehicle floors to provide a robust surface finish, unaffected by oil and fuel spills.

Noise and vibration from the engine bay was reduced through installing Sorberbarrier V to ensure the driver's comfort. The gearbox noise was also reduced through provision of an acoustic enclosure.

Results

Pyrotek was contracted to create a complete turnkey solution for the Indonesian manufacturer. Recognising that armoured personnel carriers are not just heavy military transport, but vehicles that require soundproofing to keep occupants safe and focused, an effective solution needed to be found.

Following installation, Pyrotek's acoustic product range reduced the level of noise within the vehicle to as low as 65dBA, pleasing the manufacturer and improving the comfort and safety of the military personnel.
