One of the grandest old ladies of Australianarchitecture has seen more power struggles thanany building in Australia. Old Parliament House(OPH) in Canberra was home to Australia's FederalParliament from 1927 until it was superseded in1988. It then became a 'living museum of politicalhistory' and a major tourist attraction, hosting manyevents and art exhibitions. It is a nationally listedheritage building.

However, Old Parliament House is now beingupdated to ensure it retains its position of power inAustralian history as we move deeper into the 21stcentury. Partially re-opened in Autumn 2009, thisgrand old building is undergoing a majorredevelopment. This is where Altro came in.

First contacted by the OPH Facility Manager toprovide some technical advice for the kitchen floor,the Altro consultant discovered they had acompetitor's safety flooring product which was notonly non-complaint but had also been incorrectlyinstalled. Naturally, it failed after only 12 months,causing much damage to the sub-floor. Major workswere required to rectify and bring the floor up tosatisfy Australian Standards.

The solution was to utilise Altro's Single Point ofContact services to install the Altro QuicklaySystem. The Quicklay System is a combination ofAltro KR12-30, Altro's highest rated product for slipresistance, with Altro Everlay A ensuring thatinstallation downtime is kept to a minimum.

Working in tandem with our experienced partners,Asset Flooring Group and their fully trainedinstallers, and building works consultant PBIAustralia, Altro arranged everything to rectify theproblem.

The project was delivered on budget and aheadof schedule - actually in 5 days instead of thescheduled 2 weeks!

The works delivered to the customer includedremoval of fixtures & fittings and existing floorcoverings, rectification of falls to wastes, andsupply and install of the Altro Quicklay System.All while complying with heritage buildinglegislation.
