Bridge Stormwater Drainage with Anti-Slip Grates from ACO

Bennelong Bridge, Homebush Bay, NSW

Known originally as Homebush Bay Bridge, it was named Bennelong Bridge after the historic indigenous river resident Bennelong. A 330m long structure spanning across Homebush Bay between Rhodes and Wentworth Point, its Sydney's first designated T-Way bridge to exclusively carry State Transit Authority buses, cyclists, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles.

Project Design Brief

Designers required effective drainage to stop water running off from the bridge on to Gauthorpe Street, on the Rhodes side and Footbridge Boulevard, on the Wentworth Point side. A key aspect of the drainage design was to stop road debris from entering the stormwater system and to ensure that the grate type was safe for pedestrians and cyclists.

ACO's Solution

  • KlassikDrain K300 system with Iron Galvanised Intercept Heelsafe® Anti-Slip grates.
  • ACO's Technical Services Department provided design suggestions and accurate hydraulic data to ensure the correct channel and grate was chosen for the application.

Benefits

  • The channels integrally cast in galvanised steel edge provides both a good restraint for pavements and a visually pleasing straight contour along the run.
  • The Heelsafe® Anti-Slip grate has been tested for a slip resistance of P3 (AS 4586) and is complaint with AS 3996 for bicycle tyre safety.
  • The Heelsafe® Anti-Slip grate comprises 7mm slots ensuring small debris would not pass through and heels would not be trapped.
