EJ Stormwater and Sewer Covers with Real Time Monitoring and Tracking for Underground FacilitiesAs the wet weather hits the east coast of Australia, EJ stormwater & sewer covers can do more than just safely keep a lid on things. In a time when concerns about the environment and severe weather have never been more prevalent, the scrutiny is now on major players to proactively institute environmental welfare and mitigation programs. In collaboration with the Brisbane City Council, EJ Australia are researching solutions for environmental issues and working not only within Australia but across the world to boost environmental-related safety. One of these solutions is the EJ iCoverTM access covers that provide real-time monitoring and tracking capabilities for underground facilities. Previously, Water Authorities and Local Councils installed manhole covers for the sole purpose of providing access to underground networks for monitoring and repair. To this end, the most effective solutions have typically been robust, durable iron castings that can endure tough traffic loads and all sorts of weather conditions. However, monitoring the infrastructure these covers protect can often require maintenance crews to be on standby 24/7 at enormous cost to ratepayers. With the iCoverTM strategy, manhole covers are utilised as information portals that gather data across a network of access pits and transmit that information via a low power wide area network (LPWA) to a data collection hub. Because manhole covers are located on top of many strategic assets such as sewer, stormwater, water, gas, lighting, electricity, and telecommunications, they are ideal to use for essential data collection. By marrying digital communication technology with strategically located manhole covers, we can create a network of unobtrusive "eyes and ears" in the ground. EJ Asia Pacific, in conjunction with local authorities, has trialled various covers to determine which type best allows the transmission of wireless data. Both our full composite covers from the USA and our hinged MAESTRO™ cast ductile iron covers from France (with Australian-made fibre composite aerial plates) have proven to be hugely successful. Real-time monitoring is available with IOT sensor covers to keep a watchful eye on fluid level heights, GPS location and other functions. Be better prepared for storm season. Proud to be working on this initiative with BCC stormwater using the advanced MAESTRO covers; specifically badged for this important job. Visit www.ejco.com for more information.
