Flood Defence and DA Approval from Flooding Solutions

Designing for Development Authority Approval

In February 2016, NASA documented that the Earth has breached the 2 degrees Celsius above "normal" heat benchmark. Global warming and climate change are going into overdrive. Experts have dubbed the event as a terrifying milestone for humanity, as this shift could bring about extreme weather conditions that can cause flooding.

With 80% of the population residing within 100 kilometres of Australia's coastline, mitigating against safety, property and life risks due to flooding has become a consideration to get a Development Consent Authority approval.

The Development Consent Authority is made up of councils in the local government that oversees the implementations under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act of 1979. The consent authorities allow the use of sophisticated flood protection barriers for major developments such as a new building or major retrofit projects. The council's grant project endorsement on conditions that building openings like walkways, basements and basement windows, carpark driveway ramps, garages and doorways are protected from flooding.

To get a development authority approval, the following documents must be submitted:

  • Completed DA form
  • Digital copies of plans and supporting documentations
  • Statement of environmental effects
  • Required fees
  • Scaled drawings of the proposed development
