Tank Repair Bathurst with Kevlar Protective Coating from Bayset

concrete tank repair

Month/Year:
September 2001

Products:
NMP 1720 Heavy-duty protective coating with Kevlar

The Problem:
Bathurst City Council in NSW, had a substaintial leak in a new concrete tank, Kelso Number 17. The tank has a 'one-piece' poured floor with 'infill areas' surrounding the pipe work penetrations. Divers carried out an inspection and found a cracking in the 'infill' areas due to insufficient width and the usage of a different batch of concrete to that used in the main pour. All work was to be performed underwater as draining the tank wasn't an option.

The Solution:
The cracks were wire brushed to remove any surface contaminants and loose concrete particles. A 'modelling clay' type material was applied over the cracks to stem the water flow caused by 12 metres of head pressure insude the tank. NMP 1720 epoxy was applied with a stiff, plastic spatula over the top of the initial sealing material, encapsulating it within the complete repair.

Notes/Comments:
There was an immediate slowing down of external leakage, and all flow had ceased by the next day. There would have been a substantial volume of accumulated water under the tank, and this accounted for the continuing, but decreasing flow over the 24-hour period. The repairs have been monitored over a two-year period, and the NMP epoxy has continued to maintain good adhesion to the concrete floor without cracking or deterioration.
