| Flat Roof Thermal Insulation Barrier Installation Video from Solartex
RESIDENTIAL FLAT CONCRETE ROOF SYDNEY PROBLEM: The client was living in the home for a number of years and was complaining of excessive heat during summertime with room temperatures reaching and remaining in a high thirty degree Celsius range late into evenings and in the early mornings. With rising electrical costs, air-conditioning the home was becoming too expensive and not environmentally friendly. Furthermore, the roof was noisy due to thermal contraction during the evening and expansion during the day (diurnal heat change). SOLUTION: Solartex Insulation Solutions installed a thermal insulation barrier to the topside of the existing rooftop concrete slab of the home. This will combat heat and ensure a cooler house in summertime as well as eliminating diurnal heat change noise. An added benefit is winter performance, which will reduce heating consumption for the client during cooler months. This combined will allow the client to save on electricity throughout the year. This was achieved via the following product and installation method. PRODUCT: A high density rigid Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation Board 50mm* - R1.8 added product rating. This product was chosen to work in conjunction with a new paver ballast system incorporating a Geotextile Filter fabric. The combination of board, fabric and paver provides a "thermal break" stopping conductive heat load passing through the concrete roof top to the ceiling and rooms below. *The existing parapet wall governed the thickness of the board chosen. INSTALLATION: Installation required insulation material to be manually measured, cut and placed using non-mechanical fixings. A tight fit of boards, using the tongue and groove profile was maintained. Existing protrusions, e.g. a skylight, were adapted to and edges were dressed to provide a neat finish.
RESULT: The client has observed temperatures in the house are now temperate. This has allowed the family to switch off the air-conditioner and save on electricity bills and energy.
