Flood Barrier Design QUT Collaboration from Flooding Solutions

The Winner is: An Innovative Australian Flood Barrier
In the rapidly changing and disruptive climate of 21st century Australia, innovation is projected
to become a key driver of economic growth.
In 2015, Australia is ranked 17th on the overall Global Innovation Ranking while the country
placed 10th on Human Capital and research, 4th on infrastructure innovation, 9th on Market
sophistication and 27th on Ecological Sustainability. Australia's comfortable ranking can be
attributed to the increase in the number of knowledgeable workers and innovation linkages.
Innovation brings new products and technology to the market, develops thinkers and leaders,
and pioneers new effective business models. And there is no better place to start building a
culture of innovation than the walls of the academe.
Industry-Academe Linkage
Queensland University of Technology's approach to educating future innovative entrepreneurial
designers, is to enable students to put their ideas into practice. In order to become competitive
players not only within the Australian Design and Innovation industry, but also in the global
market.
NSW based Flooding Solutions Advisory Group are leaders and innovators in the Flood
Protection industry. Flooding Solutions is at the forefront of designing, manufacturing and
installing flood protection products that meet the needs of their large corporate clients and

In the pursuit of opening minds to the skills and science of developing flood barriers and other
flood protection devices, Flooding Solutions Advisory Group has recently collaborated with the
Queensland University of Technology for a unique project. Students were asked to design a
temporary flood levee for community protection, with attention to simplicity, sustainability, cost
efficiency and usability. Participants must design a flood protection product that can be
Australian made from Australian materials.
The winning team will see actual implementations of their design to be manufactured and
commercialised by Flooding Solutions. The winning temporary flood levee will also be marketed
to our Asian neighbours in need of affordable flood protection options.
The Real Winner
The competition focuses on the importance of recognising and developing potential, while
exposing students to good design principles that are applicable in real world scenarios. At the
end of the day, the Australian Design and Innovation Industry gains a group of young designers
who have an insight on how to protect communities against one of our most damaging natural
hazards, flooding.
Flooding Solutions believes in supporting home grown talents and products. It is one way to
contribute to the Australian economy by creating local jobs and reducing costs of production.
Collaboration is key in order to gain an advantage in the marketplace. By fostering local design
through information sharing, Australia will be able to face the threats of climate change while
developing worldclass, high-quality Australian Flood Barriers.
The collaboration between the Queensland University of Technology and Flooding Solutions
