Flooding Solutions Supports Australian Design & Innovation

Necessity is the mother of innovation.

During the course of history, human's innate need to make things easier for ourselves in order to communicate and survive have continuously driven technology, science, engineering, architecture and other industries.

Over the years, Australian Design and Innovations have made countless contributions to the world and its ever growing need for solutions. For example, in 1889 Arthur James Arnot patented the world's first electric drill in order to make drilling rock and digging coal easier. In 1978, the Cochlear implant was successfully tested and forever changed the lives of those with auditory difficulty. Australians wirelessly connected the world through Wifi technology in 1992, thus making communication and information sharing more convenient.

In recent years, Australia experienced an onset of flooding due to the intermittent effects of climate change. From Summer snow in Tasmania, global droughts and hundred year floods becoming 1-in-20 year events, these polarising conditions are happening at such a rapid pace that it puts emphasis on the design and development of flood protection measures for sustainable building and construction.

This year Flooding Solutions Advisory Group and the Queensland University of Technology combines industry and academia on one stage in order to find the next champion of Australian Design and Innovation. The competition focuses on building and designing flood barriers and other flood protection technology, that could potentially help shield flood risk areas in Australia.
