Powerclean - Electrostatic Precipitator with Automatic Cleaning
2-Stage electrostatic precipitators (ESP's) have been used since the mid-1940's, as air cleaning devices to remove sub micron particles from ambient and process air. Manufacturers have given much design attention to the collection efficiency of ESP's and little attention to the reliability. Flanders has engineered the Power Clean TM line of ESP's not only to provide the highest efficiency, but also a new level of operating dependability. At the heart of any ESP is the ionizer-collector cell. Power Clean uses Flanders Type High Capacity Collector cell, a cell that has a larger gross face area the most other ESP's on the market. A weak link to all ESP's is the discharge electrode; almost all other ESP's in the market place use a thin gauge brittle tungsten wire. As with an incandescent light bulb filament, this wire will fail and render the ESP inoperative. Flanders Power Cleans uses no wires instead a specially designed 75mm wide 24-gauge stainless steel blade is used, which will not fail.
Particle Collection Efficiency
ESP efficiency is measured on a single pass of contaminant charge. As with applications such as kitchen exhaust, the usually accepted design parameter is 95% efficiency. Since this application deals with a process-generated contaminant, the test method used is MIL-STD-282, more commonly known as the DOP Test Method. A single pass ESP of sufficient integrity is more than capable of this efficiency.
Odour Reduction
As with all ESP's they are particle collectors, not odour molecule collectors. True, ESP's produce Ozone, which is an oxidant, but is produced in such minute amounts there is no significant value in odour reduction. An industry rule-of-thumb is that particles carry 50% of odour molecules. The remaining is present in molecular form. This requires a different treatment, such as adsorption (carbon filters) to adequately control.
