Manifolded Fume Exhaust System for UNSW from Camfil Airepure

Together with mechanical consultants ARUP, Camfil Airepure was proud to be involved in the early stages of developing a safe and cost-effective manifold fume exhaust system for the new Science & Engineering Building (SEB) for UNSW, Sydney's Kensington campus.

Building a flexible laboratory core for future space or equipment requirements, ARUP was assigned to do the mechanical design of the new SEB building, considering the following:

  • Quantity of exhaust air required to adequately serve the demands of the fume cupboards and general exhaust system.
  • Selection of a minimum nozzle discharge velocity to ensure no adverse effect to the surrounding areas from the fume exhaust.
  • Use of a control system for the manifold fans to ensure a safe and compliant amount of air is ventilated from each fume cupboard at all times.
  • Using a design which allows for simple reconfiguration of the laboratories to future proof the building.
  • Achieving minimum possible energy consumption and operating costs whilst meeting the above requirements.

ARUP successfully designed the manifold fume exhaust system and specified Strobic Air Tri-Stack™ Mixed Flow Dilution Fans from Camfil Airepure to achieve the desired outcome. The exhaust system has significantly helped the university to address issues on air pollution plus re-entrainment and odour control, preventing these toxins from entering the facility and neighbouring buildings.
