Sustainable Cement Manufacturing with GCP Applied Technologies

For years, GCP Applied Technologies has assisted a number of local and international cement plants to shift to more sustainable cement manufacturing techniques. In response to the global focus of reducing CO2 emissions from concrete and cement production plus general contracting, the team has come up with solutions to help relevant companies reduce their carbon footprint and improve their sustainability measures.

GCP's sustainable cement manufacturing strategies include grinding aids and other quality improvers. For example, their OPTEVA™ CBA® quality enhancing additives has helped a Tunesian cement plant improve their production by 20 tons per hour, or 17%. This excellent result also saw the dramatic cut down on production and greenhouse gas emissions by an incredible margin. They reduced their clinker factor by increasing the limestone content by 5%. With these measures now in place, production of 1M tons of cement per year has been achieved with a reduction of 4,000 tons of CO2 incurring electricity savings, and an additional 45,000 tons of CO2 reduction from clinker replacement.

The same technique was applied for an Algerian cement plant, although this time, the OPTEVA™ XS 255 quality improver was utilised increasing the limestone from 6% to 15%. The production and CO2 emissions dropped by 365,000 tons per year.
