Colourful Brick Building Extension with PGH Bricks & Pavers

PGH bricks add lively vibe to CQU's Health Clinic extension

Bricks from PGH Bricks & Pavers were specified for the extension building at Central Queensland University's Rockhampton Health Clinic.

Constituting the next stage of development for the clinic, the extension seamlessly integrates with the main building, providing additional functional amenity and enhancing the original design intent. Designed by Reddog Architects and built by JM Kelly Builders, the project used a range of bricks from PGH including Fizz, Harvest Cream (Smooth) and Crevole (Velour) to create a lively, bright and functional extension.

The material palette, which includes face brickwork externally as well as internally, is a lively interpretation of colours found in the natural environment. Factors such as the long term maintenance of the facade, the importance of providing established landscapes at building handover as well as prioritising generous proportions, dynamic volumes and humane textures within the building influenced the project's financial decisions - the selection of bricks was integral to this decision.

The project won several accolades including 2016 RAIA Central Queensland Regional Architecture Awards - Commendation - Public Architecture; 2016 RAIA Central Queensland Regional Architecture Awards - J.W. Wilson Award for Building of the Year; and 2016 AIA Queensland State Architecture Awards - Commendation - Public Architecture.
