The new ANU Research School of Physics, designed by Hassell and overlooking Lake Burley Griffin, is a landmark project connecting science, architecture and wellbeing. With laboratories, flexible workspaces, cleanrooms, social areas, and a 250-seat auditorium, the building emphasises light, visibility and collaboration.

Expansive glazing and transparent interiors maximise natural light and views, while also creating challenges in managing glare, heat gain and privacy. To meet these needs, Hassell turned to Verosol, in collaboration with Watson Blinds, for tailored shading solutions.

The installation features automated Ambience motorised roller blinds powered by Somfy motors, fully integrated with the Building Management System (BMS). Using Verosol 203 SilverScreen Performance fabric, the systems optimise solar control, reduce energy use, and protect sensitive laboratory spaces. On Level 3, motorised blinds prevent direct light from reaching cleanrooms, while workplace zones balance glare reduction with user control through manual overrides.

In the auditorium, a customised heavy-duty twin roller blind system combines SilverScreen blinds with Verosol 710 Aspect blockout fabric, enabling full blackout for AV presentations. Custom-engineered Twin Veromax brackets and discreet pelmet designs ensured seamless integration with the facade's architectural rhythm.

By combining precision, performance and aesthetics, Verosol has delivered a responsive, energy-efficient solution aligned with ANU's vision.
