The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is home to an extensive collection of Dutch art and history, including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals. Housed in P.J.H. Cuypers' 1885 building, the museum required a solar-control solution that could protect its collection while maintaining the character of its impressive interiors. Balancing daylight and protection

The challenge centred on the building's large, characteristic windows. While they bring valuable daylight into the galleries, they also allow ultraviolet radiation to enter, creating a potential risk for sensitive artworks. At the same time, the museum needed to preserve comfortable viewing conditions for visitors and retain a connection to the surrounding city.

A considered fabric solution

In most areas, roller blinds were fitted with Verosol's 802 SilverScreen Enviro fabric. The semi-transparent metallised screen provides solar reflectance of up to 74 per cent, while its listed UV transmittance is 2 per cent. This helps manage solar exposure and glare without turning the galleries into dark, artificially lit spaces.

The fabric combines a textile appearance with a screen-like construction and is available in widths up to 3000 millimetres, supporting large window applications. Its inherent flame-retardant polyester composition is PVC-free and formaldehyde-free, with environmental credentials including Cradle to Cradle Bronze, GREENGUARD Gold and Global GreenTagCert Gold GreenRate Level A certification.

Supporting the visitor experience

For the Rijksmuseum, the result is a balanced approach to daylight management: protecting valuable works, supporting visitor comfort and retaining natural light across the museum's halls. The solution also aligns with the broader sustainability objectives associated with the renovated building.
