Motorised Blinds for Passive Cooling by Verosol Smart Design Studio's Alexandria workplace was conceived as a demonstration of environmentally sustainable design, with a brief to operate comfortably without conventional air conditioning. Its operational strategy combines natural ventilation, ceiling fans, underfloor hydronic systems and solar control to manage Sydney's changing conditions while maintaining access to daylight. Verosol supplied Ambience motorised single and multi-link roller blinds in 205 SilverScreen Performance fabric. The metallised semi-transparent fabric was specified throughout the studio, particularly to east- and west-facing glazing where solar exposure is greatest. It provides a solar reflectance of up to 77 per cent while reducing heat and glare at the window and preserving outward vision. The blinds and operable windows are integrated through a building management system using predictive weather information to respond to conditions. Alongside the project's 260 photovoltaic panels, this coordinated approach enables a naturally lit, comfortable workplace during hot Sydney summers, including days above 40°C.
