Automated Roller Blinds for Education Buildings by Verosol At the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences building at Macquarie University, a striking architectural balance between timber structure and expansive glazing required a shading solution capable of controlling light and heat without compromising the design intent. Designed by Architectus and completed in 2020, the Ainsworth Building uses cross-laminated timber and glulam alongside full-height glass facades to create learning environments that visually connect with the surrounding campus landscape. To manage glare and solar gain from the extensive glazing, architects specified Ambience automated motorised roller blinds from Verosol. The system combines 203 SilverScreen Performance semi-transparent fabric, offering strong solar reflectance and outward visibility, with 710 Aspect blockout fabric for complete light control when required. Integrated with a building management system using Somfy motor automation, the blinds track the sun's movement throughout the day while still allowing occupants to override the settings manually. By pairing automated control with high-performance fabrics, the Ambience system supports both occupant comfort and architectural transparency in contemporary education facilities.
