NEPEAN Building & Infrastructure continue to build their impressive architectural portfolio with the addition of Hornsby Mental Health Unit to their project credentials.

A $33.59 million capital project approved by the Department of Health in 2009, the colourful and striking building is a purpose built facility for Acute Adult, Child and Adolescent Mental Health patients.

Mastermesh® perforated panels as sunshades and screening

Officially opened by Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research Jillian Skinner MP and Minister for Mental Health Kevin Humphries MP, the facility will provide:

• a 35 bed acute adult ward to replace the existing Lindsay Madew facility
• a 12 bed child and adolescent ward
• child and adolescent mental health community services
• therapy rooms, family meeting areas, gym facility, courtyards
• onsite parking for 155 cars

Hornsby is the first centre for children and adolescents living in the Northern Sydney and Central Coast communities to provide an inpatient facility, ensuring they have access to the best possible mental health care.

NEPEAN worked closely with fabricators Jig Master Engineering to ensure they could deliver perfect quality material on time and as per schedule to builders Hansen Yuncken, who were awarded the construction tender for the entire redevelopment.

Perforated screens - aesthetic and practical material

Being a purpose built facility, several specific design elements were requested to ensure the two-storey building met expectations from both an aesthetic and usage perspective.

The facility has a suspended reinforced ground floor and a post-tensioned first floor with a lightweight steel roof structure, colourful cladding and Mastermesh® perforated aluminium screens and sunshades.

Mastermesh® supplied a total of 72 perforated aluminium sheets which were then folded, powder coated and fitted with frames to be applied around window areas as sunshades both on the architectural facade and to the sides of the building.
