Steel Lintels and Quality Control by Galintel® from Nepean

At a time of increasing insurance costs and consumer litigation, building certifiers should seek documented proof of code compliance, particularly in regard to steel components, according to John Morris, Manager of Galintel.

"The best form of consumer protection is prevention, by achieving the right outcome in the beginning," Morris said.

"While most residential and commercial buildings are primarily brick or concrete, they require the use of steel for critical linkage, strength and anchorage within building systems.

"Inadequately protected steel work can give rise to serious structural problems, which in many cases will remain covered and unseen until structural failure," Morris said. "Building certifiers are already being asked to accept responsibility for judging the exposure severity of the building location, in line with the BCA directions on levels of corrosion severity."

He said specifiers should demand documented proof that structural components comply with AS/NZ 2699 which addresses the durability and reliability of such items as wall ties, connectors, lintels and shelf angles.

"We advise builders to look for the Galintel brand on the lintel as an assurance of a genuine product which meets all relevant standards and is protected by our performance guarantee," Morris said.
