Brightgreen COVID Response Technologies for Workplace Safety

Wear a mask. Stand 1.5 metres apart. Use hand sanitiser, but make sure it's at least 60% alcohol. Don't touch your face. Ensure there's no more than one person per 4 square metres of floor space. Don't just clean but sanitise surfaces. Do so often.

People haven't had this many rules since they left the "no running by the pool" age. It can be difficult to remember everything and to learn so many new tricks at once.

COVID Response Technologies

Melbourne-based lighting and technology design company, Brightgreen, has released activity monitors that track safety protocols. The company also designed and released germicidal UV-C lights earlier this year.

"Wellness technology," said Brightgreen CEO David O'Driscoll, "is something we've had in the pipeline for a while. Studies have shown that building health has a larger impact on your personal wellness than perhaps even your doctor. We've been able to evolve that base technology to create COVID response solutions."

Activity Monitors

Brightgreen's activity monitors use stereoscopic vision, which functions like two eyes via binocular lenses. This means that the monitors can differentiate between people wearing masks and those without. Occupancy, person-to-person distance, and how often people use hand sanitiser is also monitored.

Privacy Concerns

O'Driscoll was quick to point out that the monitors would not invade anyone's privacy.

"We don't want to identify or single anyone out," he said. "The footage will only show dots on a screen."

The surface-mounted monitors notify space administrators when safety procedures are being broken, as well as provide safety metrics. For example, a report might state that 30% of people didn't go near hand sanitiser stations one day. O'Driscoll said these metrics will give administrators actionable information to improve safety policies.

Germicidal UV-C Lights

The germicidal UV-C lights Brightgreen released earlier this year have also evolved. Air filtration lights can now be used in elevators and with HVAC systems to destroy airborne pathogens. Out-of-sight UV boxes disinfect escalator handrails each rotation. And, a ceiling light disinfects spaces of up to 40 square metres during overnight cycles.

"It's an ongoing product evolution as we step up our COVID response," said O'Driscoll. "We want to contribute to the community, and we're developing new products as the situation calls for them."
