Polystyrene insulation sheets are the centrepiece of the trusted Foamex catalogue. Foamex is a recognised leader in polystyrene innovation, carving a niche within the building, construction, packaging and creative industries. The Australian-owned and operated company aims to provide the high-performance resources for a more efficient and sustainable built environment.
Originating in Germany, Passivhaus or "Passive house" is a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in infrastructure. The sophisticated design results in ultra-low energy buildings that consume less energy for space heating or cooling. In addition to excellent thermal performance, Passivhaus buildings benefit from exceptional airtightness with mechanical ventilation. In action, Passivhaus significantly reduces the ecological footprint.
Passivhaus is the world's fastest growing energy performance standard, used in over 30,000 buildings to date. From Europe to Antarctica, Passivhaus has made its way to Australia with efficient adaptability to its warm to moderate climate. Among the most prominent showcases of Passivhaus design and low-e technologies is the Jerrabomberra Tennis Facility in New South Wales. And Foamex is proud to be a part of this national achievement in sustainable building.
Foamex was enlisted to supply extruded polystyrene sheets (XPS) from their best-selling Styroboard product range. The lightweight building material served as seamless under slab insulation in the complete suite of Passivhaus solutions within the Jerrabomberra Tennis Facility.
Styroboard XPS is renowned for outstanding insulation on account of its tight closed cellular matrix. During production, solid polystyrene resin beads are combined with additives in an extruder. After melting in a viscous liquid, the beads expand in volume with a blowing agent. The mixture is then subjected to controlled heat and pressure through a die, resulting in rigid polystyrene insulation sheets for cutting into Styroboard XPS. With Styroboard XPS, homes and commercial properties provide year-long comfort from maintained indoor temperatures.
Along with high compressive strength, the superior thermal performance of Styroboard XPS makes for the ideal solution to a strong insulated under slab within the factory pre-fabricated building. When stacked up against traditional insulation materials, Styroboard XPS boasts higher long-term R-values preventing external temperature influences that lead to internal temperature fluctuations. Foamex allows users to promote positive energy, while drastically cutting back on resource and energy consumption.
The Foamex team supplied a total of 200m2 of Styroboard XPS in the thickness of 50mm. Fondly known as the architectural esky, Jerrabomberra Tennis Facility was completed by Laros Technologies as a pro bono project.
