Foamex is a leading provider of both expanded (EPS) extruded polystyrene sheets (XPS). For the former, the production team subjects compact resin beads to steam heat inside special machines called pre-expanders. In this pre-expansion stage, the beads expand up to 40 times their original volume under 80°C to 100°C temperatures, forming billions of closed cells containing tiny air bubbles. After a maturing period, the cellular beads undergo a final steam-heating process inside a mould to product lightweight EPS.

On the other hand, XPS is manufactured by combining solid polystyrene resin beads with additives in an extruder. Through a melting process, the beads turn into a viscous liquid, whereupon a blowing agent is injected to expand its volume. Under controlled heat and pressure, the resulting mixture is forced through a die to form the XPS foam plastic.
