Innovative Under Concrete Slab Insulation by Foamex

Foamex is a vanguard of cutting-edge under concrete slab insulation using the cost-effective properties of polystyrene. The Australian-owned and operated company has specialised in the design, manufacture and distribution of polystyrene innovations since 1982. The product development team at Foamex proudly presents Diamond Pods as the ideal solution to insulating from under the building foundation.
What are Diamond Pods?
Foamex Diamond Pods are waffle pod void formers, designed specifically for under concrete slab insulation in domestic, commercial and industrial applications. The lightweight, yet structurally strong polystyrene provides support while minimising the effects of soil movement. In addition, Diamond Pods reduce the amount of concrete required for a build, resulting in fewer costs and construction time as compared to traditional concrete pours.
Diamond Pods are comprised of moulded cells within the waffle pod design, and natural air pockets in the expanded polystyrene, thereby achieving a higher level of insulation. With high, long-term R-values, the void formers provide an insulation benefit of up to R1.0 (W/mK thermal resistance). In action, Diamond Pods remarkably reduce energy consumption in the home.
According to Expanded Polystyrene Australia (EPSA), EPS waffle pods are part of a revolution in slab construction methods. The insulation material allows for the creation of stronger, and better engineered slabs.

Why use under concrete slab insulation?
Diamond Pods are highly suited to civil engineering applications in Australia. Polystyrene waffle pods make for a sustainable solution to community works, such as the maintenance and upgrade of local roads, bridges and waterways. In fact, the building technique has reached a milestone at the 2017 Association of Public Authority Surveyors NSW conference where polystyrene waffle pods were used in the first culvert construction method in the world.
The proposal was hatched by the MidCoast Council, finding inspiration in residential building sectors that have used waffle pods for years. Grant Calvin, a senior survey designer with the MidCoast Council, explained that the waffle pod system provided a "quick, cost-effective method to install a low-level bridge, or culvert over the existing concrete causeway." The building method rendered a higher level of service to the road, while preserving aquatic habitat and irrigation access upstream. Calvin's paper on the project, "Building a Bridge with a House Slab" received the Keith Haddon Award.
With the integration of Foamex Diamond Pods, building design allows for lower cost construction, while meeting the rigorous structural requirements specified by the local government.
