Expol™ Underfloor Polystyrene Insulation for Timber Floors by Foamex

Expol™ Underfloor Polystyrene Insulation is the preferred insulation choice of major engineers and builders for timber floor applications. Unlike external wall insulation, heat energy from this insulation rises from the underfloor up to the ceiling, which efficiently minimises energy consumption and reduces energy loss.

Timber floors have low insulation property; it creates unwanted heat sinks that takes the energy out of the house, while the large space between the ground and underfloor trap cold air. Hence, underfloor polystyrene insulation is engineered to provide an effective thermal barrier for timber floors, reducing heat gain and loss during weather extremities.

Expol™ Underfloor Polystyrene Insulation from Foamex excels for its limitless benefits, including energy conservation, maintained room temperature throughout the year, and an optimum insulation rating for your home.

Used for existing and new floor installations, Expol panels are typically 1.2 metres long, 60mm thick, and formed in 4 default widths to suit standard timber joist measurements. To ensure a snug fit between the joists, all rigid polystyrene panels are cut accordingly on both sides, allowing a compression of up to 20mm for an easier installation.

Installation of underfloor polystyrene insulation can be done by a professional or by the individual through simple DIY steps from Expol:

Step 1

To obtain a snug fit, different panel sizes will be needed. Measure all joists with easy measure ruler from Expol. Place the ruler against one side of the joist, with the opposite side falling within one of the 4-panel sizes.

Step 2

Cut down the concertina edge if the panel is too wide, with at least a 5mm allowance to obtain a perfect fit for either new or existing timber floors.

Step 3

When sliding the concertina-designed panels in between the joists, the air gap must be tightly covered; these panels must be pushed up against the bottom of your timber floors to avoid unwanted spaces. Although the 50mm gap must be allocated around brick/ concrete chimneys, and 150mm around ceiling exhaust fans, metal heating flues, and OA rated recessed downlights.

Step 4

Fixings: After installation, ensure that the underfloor insulation will stay in one place for the longest time by tacking 2 Expol Fixings.

Step 5

Electrical: Before installation, place Expol Wireguard around the wires that are in direct contact with the underfloor polystyrenes. For safety, avoid using a staple gun in installing the Wireguard.

Step 6

Pipes & Plumbing: Use a sharp knife and carefully cut the panel and notch around the sophisticated areas like pipes and plumbings. Allot 100mm allowance around pipes and plumbings for future maintenance purposes.
